On Saturday, September 10th, 2016 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC) held its first Great Futures Telethon. Presented by KION News Channel 46 and Cannery Row Company, the telethon featured two hours of live television with live televised programming from a Family Night happening simultaneously at our Salinas Clubhouse. Over 150 guests attended the Family Night, which was sponsored by Chevron and featured a Chevron STEM zone, a community resource fair and a variety of activities for kids and families. Buffalo Wild Wings provided the food for the evening. Club Member performed on stage at the Salinas Clubhouse and were also featured in the live feeds. Performers included the BGCMC’s, Josh Matadamas and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County Choir.
The video content featured during the two hour show was designed to showcase the Clubs’ priority outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles and Good Character & Citizenship through interviews, performances and testimonials. Dr. Michael Jackson joined KION News Channel 46 co-anchors Amanda Gomez and Spencer Washburn in the studio, Dann Cianco was the news anchor reporting in from our social media hub and Michelle Pullido was the anchor reporting from the Family Night. Featured guests included former Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of Defense and Boys & Girls Club alumnus, Leon Panetta, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nancy Kotowski and more. Victory Dealership Group sponsored the Good Character & Citizenship portion of the show (30 minute segment) and provided phone bank volunteers who answered incoming calls for donations. Mann Packing sponsored the Healthy Lifestyles segment (also a 30 minute segment) and Famous Dave’s sponsored the phone banks, provided phone bank volunteers and dinner for the crew and studio guests. Famous Dave’s also gave out $10 gift cards for every donation of $25 or more.
On air check presentations were made by Cannery Row Company, Victory Dealership Group, Mann Packing, Salinas Valley Healthcare System, Famous Dave’s and Chevron. As of September 10th, we had raised $70,000 in sponsorships, pledges and donations.
